Accounting resumes are screened by people who think in cycles and controls. Month-end close in how many days, how many accounts reconciled, what size ledger, which standard (GAAP or IFRS), and whether an audit came back clean. Those specifics are the whole evaluation, and "prepared journal entries and reconciliations" contains none of them.
System experience is the second filter and it is nearly binary. NetSuite, SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks and Sage populate the requisition keyword list directly, and a controller staffing a team is often screening for the exact ERP they run.

The screen
What a accountant resume is actually judged on
Close cycle and what you shortened it to
"Reduced month-end close from 12 to 7 business days" is the single most valuable sentence in this field.
Scale of the books
Revenue, entity count, currencies, transaction volume. A $4M single-entity company is not a $400M multi-entity group.
Audit and controls outcomes
Clean opinions, material weaknesses remediated, SOX controls documented or tested.
Bullets
5 bullets that would survive the screen
Copy the shape, not the words. Each one leads with the result, then names the mechanism, and carries the vocabulary of the field without listing it.
Reduced month-end close from 12 to 7 business days by automating three recurring accrual schedules and moving intercompany eliminations into NetSuite.
Owned reconciliation for 40+ balance-sheet accounts across four entities and two currencies with no unreconciled items carried past 30 days.
Led the first external audit after a Series B; delivered a clean opinion with zero adjusting entries and no management letter comments.
Remediated two SOX control deficiencies in revenue recognition, documenting the redesigned control and testing it through two quarters.
Rebuilt the revenue recognition schedule under ASC 606 for 900 subscription contracts, correcting a $340K cumulative deferral error.
The rewrite that matters most in this role
Prepared journal entries, reconciliations and month-end close activities for the accounting department.
Reduced month-end close from 12 to 7 business days across four entities by automating three accrual schedules and moving intercompany eliminations into NetSuite.
Why it works: Every accountant does close. The number of days, the number of entities and the mechanism are what tell a controller how much of their problem you can take off their desk.
Skills
Skills worth listing as a accountant
Only what you would be comfortable being interviewed on. A long list dilutes every real match.
Technical & role-specific
Worth proving, not claiming
These belong inside a bullet that demonstrates them, not in a list. A line that says “communication” is worth nothing; a bullet showing you ran the workshop is worth a lot.
Keywords
What the tracking system is indexing
These are the terms a requisition for this title typically matches on. Use the ones that are true of you, inside the sentences where you did the work.
Paste the actual posting into the builder and you get this list generated from that requisition instead of the general case, including which terms you are already carrying and which bullet is the right home for the rest.
How keyword targeting worksMistakes
Errors specific to accountant resumes
Not the generic advice. These are the ones that cost people interviews in this particular field.
No close cycle time
It is the metric the profession runs on. Its absence reads as either inexperience or a resume written in a hurry.
Omitting the ERP
Naming the system is frequently the difference between a match and a miss, because controllers screen for their own stack.
CPA status left ambiguous
Licensed, candidate with parts passed, or eligible: say which. Vagueness here is read as the weakest interpretation.
Questions
Accountant resume questions
How do I list a CPA in progress?
"CPA candidate, FAR and AUD passed, remaining sections scheduled Q2 2026". It shows momentum and a date, which is what a hiring manager is planning around.
Public accounting to industry: what changes?
Translate engagements into operations: client close work becomes close ownership, audit work becomes controls and reporting. Keep the client scale as a proxy for company size.
Should I list every accounting system I have touched?
List the ones you can be tested on plus the one on the posting. Long tool lists in finance read as temp work rather than depth.
