DevOps Engineer resume example
Also indexed as: site reliability engineer · platform engineer · SRE
Platform and reliability work is invisible when it goes well, which makes it hard to write about. The fix is to quantify the absence of pain: deploy frequency before and after, mean time to resolution, the number of manual steps you deleted, the on-call pages that stopped happening.
Cost is the other lever nobody uses enough. Infrastructure engineers routinely save six figures a year and then describe it as "optimised cloud resources". Put the dollar figure in the sentence; it is the fastest way to be read as senior.

What a devops engineer resume is actually judged on
Reliability numbers with a baseline
"99.99% uptime" alone is a claim. "From 99.5% to 99.99% across four quarters after the retry and circuit-breaker work" is evidence.
Blast radius of what you owned
Number of services, clusters, engineers depending on your platform, environments you managed.
Automation that removed toil
Steps deleted, hours reclaimed per week, runbooks replaced by code.
Bullets
5 bullets that would survive the screen
Copy the shape, not the words. Each one leads with the result, then names the mechanism, and carries the vocabulary of the field without listing it.
Took deploy frequency from twice a week to 40+ times a day by replacing the hand-rolled release script with a trunk-based pipeline and automated canaries.
Cut mean time to resolution from 4.1 hours to 52 minutes by instrumenting the four services responsible for 80% of pages and rewriting their alert thresholds.
Reduced annual cloud spend $780K (34%) through right-sizing, spot adoption for batch, and tiered object storage.
Migrated 120 services onto a shared Kubernetes platform with a golden-path Terraform module, removing per-team infrastructure work entirely.
Ran incident command for 30+ SEV-2s and wrote the review process the company still uses.
The rewrite that matters most in this role
Managed CI/CD pipelines and cloud infrastructure using Terraform and Kubernetes.
Replaced a hand-rolled release script with a trunk-based pipeline and automated canaries, taking deploys from twice a week to 40+ a day across 120 services with no increase in change-failure rate.
Why it works: The weak version names tools. The strong one names the delta, the scope, and the counter-metric that proves the speed did not come at the cost of stability, which is the exact objection a platform interviewer will raise.
Skills
Skills worth listing as a devops engineer
Only what you would be comfortable being interviewed on. A long list dilutes every real match.
Technical & role-specific
Worth proving, not claiming
These belong inside a bullet that demonstrates them, not in a list. A line that says “communication” is worth nothing; a bullet showing you ran the workshop is worth a lot.
Keywords
What the tracking system is indexing
These are the terms a requisition for this title typically matches on. Use the ones that are true of you, inside the sentences where you did the work.
Paste the actual posting into the builder and you get this list generated from that requisition instead of the general case, including which terms you are already carrying and which bullet is the right home for the rest.
How keyword targeting worksMistakes
Errors specific to devops engineer resumes
Not the generic advice. These are the ones that cost people interviews in this particular field.
Uptime without a baseline
Four nines means nothing if the reader does not know what it was before you arrived.
Tooling lists that read like a job posting
Fifteen logos in a row signals nothing. The pipeline you designed, and what it replaced, signals everything.
No mention of cost
Infrastructure is one of the few functions with a direct line to the P&L. Not using it is leaving the strongest number on the table.
Questions
DevOps Engineer resume questions
SRE or DevOps: which title should I use?
Use the one on the posting you are applying to. Matching engines weight the headline heavily, and these two titles are frequently indexed as different requisitions for the same job.
How do I show on-call without sounding like a support engineer?
Frame it as ownership and improvement: pages per week before and after, what you changed to make the number fall.
Are certifications worth it here?
CKA and the cloud professional-level certifications do get filtered on at enterprises and staffing agencies. One compact line, below experience.
