Graphic Designer resume example

For design roles the portfolio decides, but the resume decides whether the portfolio gets opened, and it is often read by a recruiter or an automated screen before any designer sees it. That means the document has to be conventional, parseable and specific, even when your instinct is to design it.
Do not design your resume into a two-column PDF with type in image layers. The irony of the field is that the most beautifully set resume is frequently the one that parses into nothing. Put the craft in the portfolio and let the resume be a clean, indexable document with a prominent link.
A complete document in the Meridian family of layouts, rendered live, not a screenshot.
The screen
What a graphic designer resume is actually judged on
The portfolio link, above the fold
URL in the header, not buried at the bottom. A designer resume without a working link is a dead application.
Deliverables and production reality
Brand systems, packaging, campaign toolkits, motion, print production, prepress. What you actually shipped, and to what medium.
Business outcomes where they exist
Conversion lifts from a redesign, production time saved by a template system, agency spend brought in-house.
Bullets
5 bullets that would survive the screen
Copy the shape, not the words. Each one leads with the result, then names the mechanism, and carries the vocabulary of the field without listing it.
Built the brand system (type, colour, grid, motion) adopted across 40+ templates, cutting average asset turnaround from four days to one.
Redesigned the pricing and checkout pages with the growth team; conversion rose 18% in the following A/B test at 95% confidence.
Art-directed a campaign spanning outdoor, digital and packaging, produced with two external studios and delivered on a fixed launch date.
Brought illustration in-house, replacing $90K of annual agency spend while doubling the volume of published assets.
Ran prepress and print production for 14 SKUs of packaging, with no reprints across two production runs.
The rewrite that matters most in this role
Designed marketing materials including social media graphics, brochures and presentations.
Built the brand system (type, colour, grid, motion) behind 40+ templates, cutting asset turnaround from four days to one and bringing $90K of illustration work in-house.
Why it works: The weak version lists artefacts. The rewrite shows systems thinking, a throughput improvement and a budget effect: the three things that get a designer hired above the junior band.
Skills
Skills worth listing as a graphic designer
Only what you would be comfortable being interviewed on. A long list dilutes every real match.
Technical & role-specific
Worth proving, not claiming
These belong inside a bullet that demonstrates them, not in a list. A line that says “communication” is worth nothing; a bullet showing you ran the workshop is worth a lot.
Keywords
What the tracking system is indexing
These are the terms a requisition for this title typically matches on. Use the ones that are true of you, inside the sentences where you did the work.
Paste the actual posting into the builder and you get this list generated from that requisition instead of the general case, including which terms you are already carrying and which bullet is the right home for the rest.
How keyword targeting worksMistakes
Errors specific to graphic designer resumes
Not the generic advice. These are the ones that cost people interviews in this particular field.
Designing the resume itself
Text boxes, icon fonts and multi-column layouts are what break parsers. Keep the document plain and let the portfolio carry the craft.
A software list with no work behind it
Everyone lists the Adobe suite. What separates candidates is what you shipped with it and at what scale.
A portfolio link that is hard to find or hard to open
Header placement, no password, and a landing page that loads on a phone. Recruiters check on mobile more often than designers expect.
Questions
Graphic Designer resume questions
Should my resume be a designed PDF?
Keep one plain, parseable version for applications and a designed one for direct conversations. The plain version is what gets you into the system; the designed one is a nice thing to hand someone in person.
How much of the portfolio should be on the resume?
One line per role naming the deliverable type, plus the link. The case studies belong in the portfolio, where you control the sequencing.
Do I need business metrics as a designer?
Not for every bullet, but one or two are disproportionately effective; they signal that you understand what the design was for.
