Medical Assistant resume example

Also indexed as: CMA · clinical assistant · back office medical assistant

Medical assistant roles split into front office, back office, or both, and clinics screen for the half they are short on. Say explicitly which you have done and at what volume (patients roomed per day, providers supported, procedures assisted), because "assisted physicians with patient care" does not distinguish a candidate who rooms 40 patients a day from one who rooms eight.

Certification status is the other fast filter. CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT) and CCMA (NHA) are not interchangeable in a job posting's keyword list, so use the exact credential you hold, with the awarding body, and add the expiry.

The screen

What a medical assistant resume is actually judged on

01

Certification, exactly as awarded

CMA (AAMA) and RMA (AMT) are indexed separately. Use yours, spelled out and abbreviated.

02

Clinical scope

Phlebotomy, injections, EKG, vitals, specimen handling, sterile technique: the specific procedures you are cleared for.

03

Volume and specialty

Patients per day, number of providers supported, and whether the setting was paediatrics, orthopaedics, primary care or urgent care.

Bullets

5 bullets that would survive the screen

Copy the shape, not the words. Each one leads with the result, then names the mechanism, and carries the vocabulary of the field without listing it.

  • Roomed 38–45 patients per day across four providers in a high-volume primary care clinic without a documented rooming delay.

  • Performed 900+ venipunctures annually with a first-stick success rate above 95%, including paediatric and geriatric draws.

  • Cut prior-authorisation turnaround from six days to under two by restructuring the submission queue and chasing payers on a fixed schedule.

  • Trained six new medical assistants on Epic workflows and clinic rooming standards.

  • Managed vaccine inventory and cold-chain logs across two sites with zero temperature excursions in 18 months.

The rewrite that matters most in this role

Before

Assisted physicians with patient care and performed administrative duties as needed.

After

Roomed 38–45 patients daily for four providers, performed 900+ annual venipunctures at a 95% first-stick rate, and cut prior-authorisation turnaround from six days to under two.

Why it works: One sentence, three quantified capabilities, both halves of the job. A clinic manager can staff a schedule from this; they cannot from the original.

Skills

Skills worth listing as a medical assistant

Only what you would be comfortable being interviewed on. A long list dilutes every real match.

These belong inside a bullet that demonstrates them, not in a list. A line that says “communication” is worth nothing; a bullet showing you ran the workshop is worth a lot.

Keywords

What the tracking system is indexing

These are the terms a requisition for this title typically matches on. Use the ones that are true of you, inside the sentences where you did the work.

Paste the actual posting into the builder and you get this list generated from that requisition instead of the general case, including which terms you are already carrying and which bullet is the right home for the rest.

How keyword targeting works

Mistakes

Errors specific to medical assistant resumes

Not the generic advice. These are the ones that cost people interviews in this particular field.

Hiding the certification acronym

If the posting says CMA and your resume only says "certified medical assistant", some engines will not connect them. Use both forms once.

No patient volume anywhere

Volume is the entire difference between clinic settings and it is the first thing an experienced office manager looks for.

Leaving out the EHR

Epic, Cerner, athenahealth and eClinicalWorks are screening keywords. Naming the one you know is often what gets the interview.

Questions

Medical Assistant resume questions

Do I need a certification to apply?

Many states and employers hire uncertified assistants, but certified candidates are filtered to the top. If yours is in progress, write "CMA (AAMA), exam scheduled March 2026" rather than omitting it.

Should I include externship hours?

Yes, as real experience, with the site, hours and duties. For a first job it is often the only clinical volume you can cite.

Front office or back office: which should I emphasise?

Whichever the posting leads with. Keep both on the page, but let the first bullets match the half they are hiring for.
