Network Engineer resume example
Also indexed as: network administrator · network operations engineer · NOC engineer
Network resumes tend to read as equipment inventories (Cisco, Juniper, Palo Alto, BGP, OSPF, VLANs), which is understandable, because those are genuine filter terms. But a list of protocols does not distinguish someone who has designed a resilient topology from someone who has followed runbooks in a NOC.
What distinguishes them is scale and consequence: how many sites, how many users, what uptime you held, what you migrated without an outage, and the incident you diagnosed that nobody else could. Automation is the other axis now. Network engineers who write Python and Ansible are a different candidate to those who configure by hand.

The screen
What a network engineer resume is actually judged on
Scale of what you ran
Sites, users, devices, throughput. This calibrates seniority faster than any title.
Uptime and incident record
Availability held, major incidents resolved, and the diagnosis you are proudest of.
Migrations delivered
MPLS to SD-WAN, on-premise to cloud, a data centre move. Cutover work with no outage is the strongest evidence available.
Automation
Ansible, Python, Terraform, config-as-code. Increasingly the line between a network administrator and a network engineer.
Bullets
5 bullets that would survive the screen
Copy the shape, not the words. Each one leads with the result, then names the mechanism, and carries the vocabulary of the field without listing it.
Ran the network for 42 sites and 6,800 users at 99.98% availability across two years, including two data centre failovers exercised without customer impact.
Led the MPLS to SD-WAN migration across all 42 sites, cutting circuit spend 38% ($410K annually) and halving branch provisioning time to four days.
Diagnosed an intermittent packet loss issue that three vendors had missed (asymmetric routing after a firewall HA pair upgrade), restoring a service that had degraded for six weeks.
Moved switch and firewall configuration into Ansible with peer-reviewed changes, which eliminated the class of outage caused by hand-edited configs.
Designed and delivered the AWS Transit Gateway topology connecting five VPCs and the on-premise core, with documented failover tested quarterly.
The rewrite that matters most in this role
Responsible for configuring and maintaining Cisco routers, switches and firewalls across the corporate network.
Ran the network for 42 sites and 6,800 users at 99.98% availability, and led the SD-WAN migration that cut circuit spend 38%.
Why it works: The weak version could describe a first-line administrator anywhere. The rewrite gives scale, a reliability figure, and a delivered project with a budget effect: the three things that place a network engineer on the ladder.
Skills
Skills worth listing as a network engineer
Only what you would be comfortable being interviewed on. A long list dilutes every real match.
Technical & role-specific
Worth proving, not claiming
These belong inside a bullet that demonstrates them, not in a list. A line that says “communication” is worth nothing; a bullet showing you ran the workshop is worth a lot.
Keywords
What the tracking system is indexing
These are the terms a requisition for this title typically matches on. Use the ones that are true of you, inside the sentences where you did the work.
Paste the actual posting into the builder and you get this list generated from that requisition instead of the general case, including which terms you are already carrying and which bullet is the right home for the rest.
How keyword targeting worksMistakes
Errors specific to network engineer resumes
Not the generic advice. These are the ones that cost people interviews in this particular field.
Protocol lists with no topology
Name what you designed or ran, at what size. Protocols belong in skills.
No uptime or scale figures
Reliability is the product. A network resume without a single availability or site count is hard to place.
Ignoring cloud networking
Even in heavily on-premise shops, VPC design and hybrid connectivity now appear in requisitions. Omit them and you look dated.
Questions
Network Engineer resume questions
Do I need a CCNP?
It clears filters at larger employers and is often listed as required. It is worth having, but a delivered migration outranks it in interviews.
How do I show on-call work?
As outcomes, not hours: incidents handled, mean time to restore, the recurring problem you eliminated.
Is network engineering being absorbed into cloud roles?
Partly, which is why the automation and cloud lines matter. Frame yourself as someone who does both rather than as a defender of the old stack.
