QA Engineer resume example

Also indexed as: quality assurance engineer · test engineer · SDET · automation engineer

Quality resumes are usually written as inventories of activity: wrote test cases, executed regression suites, logged defects. The trouble is that this describes the process rather than its effect, and the effect is exactly what a team hiring for quality is trying to buy: fewer things breaking in front of customers, and releases that stop being frightening.

The strongest quality resumes read almost like engineering resumes: a suite built, a pipeline it runs in, a flakiness rate driven down, an escape rate halved. If you have moved a team from manual regression weekends to a twenty-minute automated gate, that is the headline.

Summary

Backend engineer with eight years on high-throughput payment infrastructure. Took a ledger service from 400 to 9,000 writes per second without a consistency regression, and led the migration that moved 42 million accounts off a single Postgres primary. Comfortable owning a system end to end: schema design, rollout, the pager.

Experience
Senior Backend Engineer, Northwind Payments · Remote (Oakland, CA)Mar 2022 – Present
Rebuilt the double-entry ledger on an append-only event store, lifting sustained throughput from 400 to 9,200 writes per second while keeping balance reconciliation exact.
Led the shard migration of 42M accounts off a single Postgres primary across six weeks with zero customer-visible downtime and no rollback.
Cut p99 settlement latency 71% (2.4s to 690ms) by replacing synchronous fan-out with a batched outbox consumer.
Mentored four engineers; two were promoted to senior within eighteen months.
Backend Engineer, Cartogram · San Francisco, CAJun 2019 – Feb 2022
Designed the tenancy model behind the enterprise tier, which closed $3.1M in ARR that had been blocked on data isolation.
Reduced infrastructure spend 34% ($780K annualised) by moving cold tiles to object storage behind a signed-URL cache.
Wrote the incident review process still used company-wide; mean time to resolution fell from 4.1 hours to 52 minutes.
Software Engineer, Helix Robotics · Berkeley, CAAug 2017 – May 2019
Built the telemetry pipeline ingesting 1.2TB per day from 3,400 field units, replacing a batch job that ran twelve hours behind.
Shipped the fleet-diagnostics API consumed by every downstream team and by two customer integrations.
Skills
Languages: Go, TypeScript, Python, SQL
Infrastructure: Kubernetes, Kafka, Postgres, Terraform, AWS
Practices: Distributed systems, Event sourcing, Observability, Incident command

The screen

What a qa engineer resume is actually judged on

01

Escaped defects, before and after

Production bugs per release is the number the role exists to move. Very few candidates quote it.

02

Automation you wrote and maintained

Framework, language, how many journeys, where it runs, and how long it takes. Maintenance matters more than count.

03

Flakiness and trust

A suite nobody believes is worse than none. Quoting a flake rate you reduced is a strong senior signal.

04

Where you sit in the pipeline

Gating merges, nightly runs, pre-release only. This tells a reviewer how much your work is actually relied on.

Bullets

5 bullets that would survive the screen

Copy the shape, not the words. Each one leads with the result, then names the mechanism, and carries the vocabulary of the field without listing it.

  • Cut production escapes from 14 to 3 per release across a year by gating merges on a 340-case Playwright suite that runs in 18 minutes.

  • Drove suite flakiness from 11% to 0.7% by removing implicit waits and giving every test its own seeded data, which ended the practice of re-running until green.

  • Replaced a two-day manual regression pass with an automated gate, giving the team weekly releases instead of monthly ones.

  • Built the contract tests between six services with Pact, catching 19 breaking API changes before they left a feature branch.

  • Set up load testing with k6 and found the connection-pool ceiling that would have failed at the Black Friday volume the team had forecast.

The rewrite that matters most in this role

Before

Responsible for writing and executing manual and automated test cases and logging defects in Jira.

After

Cut production escapes from 14 to 3 per release by gating merges on a 340-case Playwright suite that finishes in 18 minutes.

Why it works: The weak version is the job description for the role, which every applicant shares. The rewrite gives the outcome, the mechanism, and the speed that made the mechanism acceptable to the team.

Skills

Skills worth listing as a qa engineer

Only what you would be comfortable being interviewed on. A long list dilutes every real match.

These belong inside a bullet that demonstrates them, not in a list. A line that says “communication” is worth nothing; a bullet showing you ran the workshop is worth a lot.

Keywords

What the tracking system is indexing

These are the terms a requisition for this title typically matches on. Use the ones that are true of you, inside the sentences where you did the work.

Paste the actual posting into the builder and you get this list generated from that requisition instead of the general case, including which terms you are already carrying and which bullet is the right home for the rest.

How keyword targeting works

Mistakes

Errors specific to qa engineer resumes

Not the generic advice. These are the ones that cost people interviews in this particular field.

Counting test cases as achievements

"Wrote 500 test cases" measures typing. What matters is what stopped reaching production.

Never mentioning maintenance

Everyone can write a suite. Reviewers are hiring for one that still works in a year, so say how you kept it honest.

Manual-only framing when the market wants both

Manual exploratory skill is valuable, but requisitions index on automation. If you have any, make it visible.

Questions

QA Engineer resume questions

I am manual-only. Am I stuck?

No, but pick one framework and ship something real, even internally. One genuine automated suite on the resume changes which requisitions you pass.

QA engineer or SDET?

Match the posting's word. They index differently and some tracking systems will not connect the two.

Should I list ISTQB?

Include it if you have it, since some enterprises filter on it, but it will never be the reason you are hired.
