Financial Analyst resume example

Finance resumes describe deliverables (built models, prepared reports, supported month-end) when the reviewer wants to know whether your numbers were right and whether anyone acted on them. Forecast variance is the profession's own accuracy metric and it appears on almost no resumes.
The other half is decisions. A model that killed a bad expansion, a pricing analysis that raised margin, a variance you caught before the board saw it. Finance is a staff function whose value is entirely in the choices it changes, so name the choice.

What a financial analyst resume is actually judged on
Forecast accuracy
Variance against actuals, and the trend. This is the clearest evidence of competence available in the field.
Scale of what you model
Revenue, headcount, cost base or portfolio size. It calibrates seniority immediately.
A decision your analysis changed
One properly told story about a recommendation that was taken beats a list of recurring reports.
Systems and depth of tooling
Excel is assumed. NetSuite, SAP, Anaplan, Adaptive, Power BI, and increasingly SQL are the differentiators.
Bullets
5 bullets that would survive the screen
Copy the shape, not the words. Each one leads with the result, then names the mechanism, and carries the vocabulary of the field without listing it.
Owned the quarterly revenue forecast for a €140M business unit, holding variance to actuals within 2.1% across six consecutive quarters.
Built the unit-economics model behind the decision to exit two of five markets, protecting roughly €3.4M of annual contribution.
Rebuilt the monthly close reporting pack in Power BI and SQL, cutting preparation from three days to four hours and ending manual copy-paste errors.
Ran the pricing analysis that moved the mid-tier plan from €49 to €59; net revenue rose 8% with churn unchanged at 90 days.
Caught a double-counted intercompany accrual during flux review, correcting a €610K overstatement before the audit committee pack went out.
The rewrite that matters most in this role
Prepared monthly financial reports and assisted with budgeting and forecasting for the business unit.
Owned the quarterly revenue forecast for a €140M unit, holding variance within 2.1% across six quarters, and rebuilt the close pack from three days to four hours.
Why it works: The weak version says a finance team existed and you were in it. The rewrite names ownership, the scale, the accuracy standard you held, and an efficiency gain the controller would have noticed.
Skills
Skills worth listing as a financial analyst
Only what you would be comfortable being interviewed on. A long list dilutes every real match.
Technical & role-specific
Worth proving, not claiming
These belong inside a bullet that demonstrates them, not in a list. A line that says “communication” is worth nothing; a bullet showing you ran the workshop is worth a lot.
Keywords
What the tracking system is indexing
These are the terms a requisition for this title typically matches on. Use the ones that are true of you, inside the sentences where you did the work.
Paste the actual posting into the builder and you get this list generated from that requisition instead of the general case, including which terms you are already carrying and which bullet is the right home for the rest.
How keyword targeting worksMistakes
Errors specific to financial analyst resumes
Not the generic advice. These are the ones that cost people interviews in this particular field.
No accuracy figure
Forecast variance is your professional scorecard. Leaving it out means a reviewer assumes it was unremarkable.
Listing reports as achievements
Recurring deliverables describe the calendar. Name the decision one of them changed.
Claiming Excel as a skill and stopping
Everyone claims it. SQL, a planning tool and a BI platform are what now separate candidates.
Currency and scale left implicit
A €4M budget and a €400M budget are different jobs. Always give the size.
Questions
Financial Analyst resume questions
Do I need a CFA or CPA?
For FP&A, neither is usually required, but they clear filters and shift the band. For accounting-heavy roles, a CPA is often literal.
How do I show confidential figures?
Use percentages or rounded ranges. "A mid-nine-figure portfolio" is credible and discloses nothing.
Is SQL really expected now?
Increasingly yes, because the data lives in a warehouse rather than an export. Even basic competence is worth listing honestly.
