Video Editor resume example

Editing is a craft job hired on a reel, but the resume still has to do two things the reel cannot: establish that you can deliver at a professional cadence, and prove you are reliable under a deadline. Volume, turnaround time and formats delivered are the substance, and almost nobody writes them down.
Where the work is commercial rather than narrative, add performance: retention curves, view-through rate, click-through on paid cuts. An editor who can say which of two openings held viewers longer is describing judgement, not just software.

The screen
What a video editor resume is actually judged on
The reel link
In the header, live, and cut short. A reviewer gives it thirty seconds.
Volume and turnaround
Deliverables a week or month, and time from footage to final cut. This is what production managers schedule against.
Formats and finishing
Long-form, short vertical, paid variants, subtitles, colour, sound, motion graphics. Say where you finish and where you hand off.
Performance of the work
Retention, view-through, click-through on the cuts you made, where the work was commercial.
Bullets
5 bullets that would survive the screen
Copy the shape, not the words. Each one leads with the result, then names the mechanism, and carries the vocabulary of the field without listing it.
Delivered 15 to 20 finished cuts a week (long-form plus vertical variants) with a same-day turnaround on social edits.
Recut the paid creative around a three-second hook test; view-through rate rose from 21% to 38% and cost per acquisition fell 24%.
Built the Premiere template and motion-graphics package the team still uses, cutting per-video finishing time from 90 to 35 minutes.
Edited a 12-part documentary series end to end, including sound mix and colour, delivered on schedule across nine months.
Set up the Frame.io review process with two rounds of notes, which ended the practice of open-ended revision cycles.
The rewrite that matters most in this role
Edited video content for social media and marketing campaigns using Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.
Delivered 15 to 20 finished cuts a week with same-day turnaround on social, and recut paid creative that took view-through from 21% to 38%.
Why it works: The weak version names the software, which is the least distinguishing thing available. The rewrite gives cadence, turnaround and a performance result: the three things that separate a working editor from a capable one.
Skills
Skills worth listing as a video editor
Only what you would be comfortable being interviewed on. A long list dilutes every real match.
Technical & role-specific
Worth proving, not claiming
These belong inside a bullet that demonstrates them, not in a list. A line that says “communication” is worth nothing; a bullet showing you ran the workshop is worth a lot.
Keywords
What the tracking system is indexing
These are the terms a requisition for this title typically matches on. Use the ones that are true of you, inside the sentences where you did the work.
Paste the actual posting into the builder and you get this list generated from that requisition instead of the general case, including which terms you are already carrying and which bullet is the right home for the rest.
How keyword targeting worksMistakes
Errors specific to video editor resumes
Not the generic advice. These are the ones that cost people interviews in this particular field.
No reel, or a ten-minute one
Link it in the header and keep it under ninety seconds, best work first.
Software list instead of throughput
Every editor has the same tools. Cadence and turnaround are what get you scheduled.
No performance data on commercial work
If you cut for paid or social, retention and view-through are available. Using them is rare and persuasive.
Unclear what you did on a credit
Say whether you were the editor, assistant, or one of several. Ambiguous credits get checked.
Questions
Video Editor resume questions
How do I present freelance and agency work together?
One freelance heading with dates, then bullets grouped by client type and format, so it reads as a practice rather than as gaps.
Should I list every project?
No. Pick the ones that match the posting's format; a brand needing vertical social does not care about your short film.
Is AI editing experience worth mentioning?
If you use it in a real workflow (transcription, rough assembly, captioning), say exactly where. Vague claims read as filler.
